STABLE STRIKES GOLD WITH YEARLING SALES PURCHASE
Kentuckiana Lodge trainer Cran Dalgety has a penchant for transforming yearlings into classic performers and Bettor Joy added to a growing list at Addington on Friday night.
He had his latest big race success with Bettor Joy in the Listed $160,875 PGG Wrightson NZ Yearling Sales 3YO Fillies Final.
The racy daughter of champion sire Bettor’s Delight follows a strong line of yearling sales buys to develop into big earners in the maroon and white colours.
Some of Cran’s earlier stand-out yearling sales buys were Smiling Shard, Bit Of A Legend, Katy Perry, Orl Black, Onlyforyou, Bettor’s Strike, Sparks A Flyin, London Legend, and Texican, all of which were secured from the sales for prices between $11,000 and $70,000.
Bettor Joy, a $80,000 yearling buy, for a trans-Tasman six-strong syndicate including wife Chrissie Dalgety, Bernard Smith, Kevin Clark, Gary Merlo, and Dalgety’s neighbours, Helena and Mike Hanning, has now won $265,533 from eight wins in 17 starts.
“A few years ago you would settle on one lot and go for it but these days you have to spec a few and syndications are the way to go,” Dalgety said.
“With Bettor Joy, we have a mixture of Australians and New Zealanders and the camarardarie you develop racing one like this is special.
“I might even get some of them to go again and buy a hair in the tail of some more from this week’s sales.”
Champion driver Dexter Dunn rated Bettor Joy to perfection from a wide gate on Friday night.
Although, Cran and Dexter came unstuck with Bettor Joy when beaten into fourth when leading up in the Australasian Breeders Crown Final at Melton in August, they went for the front-end again.
Dexter, who had four wins on the night, was able to get away with a middle 800m in 62s.
He then had most off the bit as the speedy Bettor Joy sprinted in over her last 800m in 55.8s and 26s to hold Allstars rival Elle Mac (parked) by three-quarters of a length.
She rated 1:57.7 for the full 1950m, crediting Cran and Dexter with their first wins in the Listed feature.
The stable had to settle for fourth with Bonnie Joan from a horror draw in the Gr. 1 PGG Wrightson NZ Standardbred Breeders Stakes.
Bonnie Joan locked wheels at the 300m with Shezza GNP, losing her momentum at a vital stage, but finished solidly for fourth to the Steven Reid-trained winner Utmost Delight, who was a convincing winner for Ricky May, after making a run wide over the last lap from a second row barrier.
Cran has Bettor Joy, Pat’s Delight and possibly Master Moonlite, booked to travel to Auckland on Monday for early March features.
Bettor Joy, last season’s Gr. 2 Delightful Lady Classic 2YO winner and this season’s Gr. 2 Peter Breckon Memorial 3YO Caduceus Club Ladyship Stakes winner at Auckland, returns for the Gr. 1 $125,000 Pasoces The Jewellers Northern Oaks on March 2.
Pat’s Delight will have a lead-up race that night for the Gr.1 $250,000 Woodlands Stud Northern Derby on March 9, a race the stable won last year with Raukapuka Ruler.
Master Moonlite, a sizzling finisher for second to Ocean Ridge in a strong rating 61-85 race at Addington on Friday night, is also on the radar for the Northern Derby with a final decision coming over the weekend.
