BIT OF A LEGEND TAKES YEARLY EARNINGS OVER $US410,000
Former dual Australasian Breeders Crown champ Bit Of A Legend has topped the $US410,000 mark in yearly earnings with his latest victory an open handicap at Yonkers Raceway, New York, over the weekend.
This extends his earnings in the last two years in North America to just over $US1.1 million, having won nearly $US720,000 in 2016.
Now eight, the Bettor’s Delight-Soky’s Legend entire continues to be a top money-spinner on the half-mile circuit at Yonkers for expatriate Australian trainer Peter Tritton.
This was the sixth win of 2017 in 20 starts for Bit Of A Legend.
Bit Of A Legend was raced until the death in early August of Harry von Knoblauch, aged 90. He is now raced by his family.
Last year’s $US609,000 Yonkers George Morton Levy Memorial winner (fourth in this year’s Levy Final), has racked up 38 lifetime wins from 107 starts for the equivalent of over $2 million (NZ dollars).
Regular driver Jordan Stratton led from the six gate on Sunday (NZ time), burning over the opening quarter in 26.8s then backed the speed off over the second quarter in 30s.
The ex-Kentuckiana Lodge pacer was too quick from the half, holding in 1:52.6 for the mile, outside his seasonal best of 1:50.6 on the half-mile track.
West Melton trainer Cran Dalgety prepared Bit Of A Legend’s younger half-sister Some Legend (by Somebeachsomewhere) to win on debut as a 2YO last term at Forbury in early July.
ON THE RANTAN UNBEATEN IN USA
Meanwhile, another smart former Cran Dalgety-trained pacer in On The Rantan remained unbeaten in three North American starts after last weekend.
Now four, the Bettor’s Delight-Funontherun gelding was sold to North American interests in June after winning four from 16 NZ starts for $47,815.
The younger brother to former smart Kentuckiana Lodge filly On The Town (1:56.5), and other smart winners in On The Razzle (1:53.1, Aust), Ohoka Cooper (1:56.7, Aust) and Quick Fun (1:51.6, US), has taken a fast 1:50.8 North American mark himself.
On The Rantan paced his 1:50.8 (10ths) mark second-up on the 1000m track at The Meadows, Pennsylvania.
Racing for the Jeff Brewer stable, he won again on Sunday (NZ time) at The Meadows in 1:51.4 in a $US12,200 pace.
After settling back from the outside eight barrier, On The Rantan was on the moved leading at the three-quarters mark and held by a length and three quarters.
Funontherun (TT, 1:58.3), the In The Pocket-Franciscan (New York Motoring-Assisi) dam of On The Rantan, died last month.
Her last foal is On The Cards, a now 3YO gelding, also by Bettor’s Delight, who qualified for Clevedon trainer Barry Purdon at Pukekohe on September 5, winning his mobile 2050m trial in a 2:01.2 rate.
