David Whittle, a former successful junior driver in the 1990s, has assisted part-time at the weekends for the Kentuckiana Lodge team since 2009.
He drove 32 winners (all as a junior), and one in Australia, when mainly attached to the Geoff Dunn stable.
He won six races in the mid 1990s as the owner of Clever Buck, a horse he drove for five wins, incuding the 1995 Akaroa and Hororata Cups.
Clever Buck, bred by Geoff and the late Alan Dunn, began his career during David’s time with Geoff Dunn stable, then was trained for the provincial cup victories by his latter employer, Greg Hope.
Clever Buck, a gelding by J D’s Buck, was subsequently sold to race in North America after reaching his mark in NZ.
After taking time out from the game, David spent four years driving for Inter-Island, then had a year working for Mark Purdon, before returning to drive transporters full-time for Majestic/Inter-Island.
In his “down-time” at the weekends, he enjoys keeping involved with the horses at Kentuckiana Lodge, and assists by driving workout runners as they prepare for their return to racing.
He currently holds a trials licence, but may again take out his open licence, if he again races one he owns. He last had a racedrive in 1999.
