ART UNION JOINS STABLEMATE IN RECORD BOOKS
Kentuckiana Lodge stablemates, Art Union (colt) and Delightful Lana (filly) have the distinction of holding both NZ age group 2YO pacing marks for the mobile 2600m after racing at Rangiora on Sunday, June 29.
Delightful Lana set the fillies mark at Timaru of 3:14.6 when beating the older C1 horses on May 11, while Art Union lowered the colts and geldings mark to 3:15.9 when beating the older C2 pacers on Sunday.
“I thought with the run he had (trail) he should have shown a bit more zip and won a bit easier than that, and Dex was a bit the same, but they came home in 55.6s the last 800m, so that explains it,” said trainer Cran Dalgety.
Art Union, an Art Major colt from Sparks A Flyin, raced by breeder-owners, Jim and Susan Wakefield, rated 2:01.2 for the full 2600m.
His 3:15.9 smashed the former NZ colts and geldings mark, set by Nicky Hanover at 3:19.4 in 2004.
“He might want a lie down for the next day or two, so that will do him until the Breeders Crown heat at Addington in a fortnight (July 11),” Cran said.
Art Union took his record to four wins and three placings from eight starts with Sunday’s win, taking his earnings to $55,128.
All going well, the Kentuckiana Lodge trainer will be represented by Art Union in the Australasian Breeders Crown 2YO colts division, and Katy Perry in the ABC 2YO fillies series.
“Katy Perry’s recovered good from her fall on Jewels day. Bernie Hackett and Michelle Wallis have been looking after her for us and doing a great job with her in the salt water,” Cran said.
“I’m going up to drive her in work next Saturday. If I’m happy with her, she’ll line up in the Breeders Crown fillies heat at Cambridge on the following Thursday (July 10).”
