ANOTHER MID-WEEK $20,000 USA WIN FOR BETTOR’S FIRE
It was just a quiet Tuesday (NZ time) programme at Yonkers Raceway, New York, but connections of veteran ex-Kentuckiana Lodge pacer Bettor’s Fire were the beneficiaries of yet another $US20,000 win.
The evergreen 12-year-old again took up his favoured front-running role from the five barrier an held by half a length for driver and co-owner, Ron Cushing.
The Heidi Gibbs-trained Bettor’s Fire lasted in a comfortable 1:54.4 (fifths) in the Northern Hemisphere winter conditions.
This was his second win in four starts in 2020, taking his early year earnings to $22,000.
The remarkable Bettor’s Delight-Sparks A Flyin gelding (half-brother to Safedra, the dam of this month’s Victoria Oaks winner Dr Susan), has won 59 races world-wide for over $1 million. Last year, he won $190,380 from 12 wins, four seconds and six thirds, in 31 appearances.
Other NZ-breds to win on the same Yonkers card were Alotbetter (9g Bettor’s Delight-Falcons Flybye), who continued his good USA form for the Jennifer Bongiorno stable, winning a $14,500 pace by a head in 1:53.2 (fifths), Mister Daytona (8h American Ideal-Chara), who won a $12,500 pace in 1:55.3 and Beyondthesilence (11g Courage Under Fire-Rachel Romance), who led thorughout a $10,000 pace and held by a neck in 1:56.4 for the Peter Tritton stable.
