DEXTER IMPROVES TO SEVENTH IN USA
Former top NZ driver Dexter Dunn has edged into seventh spot on the list of top North American drivers on earnings for the year.
Dexter landed individual wins at both Pennsylvania tracks, Harrah’s Philadelphia and The Downs at Pocono, on Sunday (Monday NZ time), including a $US55,168 Pennsylvania Sires Stakes 3YO Fillies Trot division with Millies Possesion at Pocono.
With 12 wins in seven days, Dexter has moved to 157 wins for the year, with his drives winning $US2,589,254 in earnings.
Tim Tetrick leads the way on earnings in North America, with his drives having won $4,253,488 from 302 victories.
Tetrick landed another feature win on Sunday, taking out the $US100,000 Betsy Ross Mares Invitational at Harrah’s Philadelphia with top NZ-bred mare Shartin in 1:49.4.
Shartin, a million dollar winning mare, has won six of seven starts for the year, for $US369,500.
Another former NZ mare in Delightfulmemphisn finished fourth, two lengths from Shartin, in the Betsy Ross for the “Nifty” Norman stable, being race-timed in 1:49.8.
Dexter didn’t have a drive in the Betsy Ross, and was luckless in the $100,000 Commodore Barry Invitational with ex-Kiwi pacer Tiger Thompson, who was unable to recover from an early break, finishing last.
Tiger Thompson, formerly trained in NZ by Brad Mowbray, has continued his good form in North America, with Dexter partnering him in his recent racing, includng a 1:50.2 mile best.
A great grandson of former top 1980s mare Frangelico, Tiger Thompson (Big Jim-Aziza) won five of 26 NZ starts for $113,369.
Going into Sunday’s six-figure feature, he had raced 18 times for the year in North America, for six wins, four seconds and four third, for $US101,835.
Dexter was able to get one over Tim Tetrick at Pocono in the feature Pennsylvania 3YO Fillies Trot, with Tetrick finishing second on the race favourite, Beautiful Sin.
