DR SUSAN JUSTIFIES HOT FAVOURITISM AT MENANGLE
An inspired decision to take in the Group Two $50,000 Garrards Raith Memorial at Menangle paid off for Dr Susan with a 1:52.1 mile on Saturday, January 11.
Dr Susan, trained by Cran Dalgety and Nathan Purdon for Cran’s wife Chrissie, was perfectly rated by driver Anthony Butt, shooting out from the four barrier to trail second favourite Keep Rockin (Luke McCarthy) over the opening quarter in 26s.
The leader eased over the second quarter in 30.4s, with Butt moving Dr Susan out in the open just after the half-mile.
Dr Susan, a dominating $1.60 favouite, had Keep Rockin’s measure turning for home, then had to hold off a storming late finish from Vincenzina to win by a head.
The smart 3YO filly time further enhances the value of Dr Susan, a daughter of champion sire Bettor’s Delight and former Southland Oaks winner, Safedra (Mach Three-Sparks A Flyin), also the runner-up to champion Adore Me in a NZ Oaks during her race career for the Cran Dalgety stable.
Dr Susan took her record to three wins from 15 start, while she also has a Group One placing wih her third to Amazing Dream and Stylish Memphis at her previous Auckland start in the Alabar Sires Stakes 3YO Fillies Championship on New Year’s Eve.
