COLLECTING QUALIFIES WITH ADDINGTON WIN
Collecting, a 2YO half-sister by Bettor’s Delight to Holy Hero, gained her qualifying ticket for the Cran Dalgety stable at the Addington trials on Wednesday, March 24.
Bred and owned by Wollongong’s Bill Green of Tex Services Pty Ltd, Collecting just missed qualifying last week at Ashburton.

She raced kindly in the trail for driver Dexter Dunn and did just enough to hold by half a neck from Idancedwithcullen, a daughter of Christian Cullen and the first foal from 2004 Nevele R Stakes 2YO Fillies winner Idancedallnight (6 wins & $103,656).
Collecting ran the mobile 2000m in 2:34.7, the leaders quickening over their last 800m in 58.1s and final 400m in 28.7s.
“She’s not strong enough to race at two, so she’ll go out for a spell now. She should make quite a nice 3YO filly,” said Kentuckiana Lodge’s David Moore.
Driver Dexter Dunn said she trialled better with the use of a boring pole at Addington, than the previous week at Ashburton.
Like Holy Hero, Collecting is small in stature but has a useful turn of speed.
She is also a half-sister to the minor winners, Hear Hear and Hard Held.
Their dam Hilarious Heather (Soky’s Atom-Hilarious Helen) won three and is a sister to Fearless Freda (two wins at two including the 2001 $100,000 PGG NZ Yearling Sales 2YO Fillies Pace when trained by Cran Dalgety), and Helena Kilena (5 wins, 1:57 mile rate, 1950m).
Half-brothers to Hilarious Heather include Awesome Andy (4 NZ wins, 4 Aust wins) and Franco Himself (3 NZ wins, 1:55.4h, US).
Hilarious Heather’s grand-dam Golden Guest (9 wins including a 3rd to her Alister Kerslake-trained stablemate Bachelor Star in the 1971 NZ Derby) was a sister to former top 1970s pacer Speedy Guest.
Idancedwithcullen, runnerup to Collecting, is trained at Rolleston by Mark Purdon and Grant Payne for breeder-owner Ian Dobson.
The Purdon/Payne stable also won the second 2YO fillies qualifier with Leecully (2f Christian Cullen-Esprit Lee), who ran clear by 4 3/4 lengths from two rivals in 2:33.9, quickening over her last 800m in 57.8s and final 400m in 28.7s.
Cran Dalgety’s father Jim also produced two qualifiers _ pacer Radiant Rita (4m Christian Cullen-Happy Hazel), and trotter Family Photo (3f S J’s Photo-Ultra Violet).
Radiant Rita, a half-sister to the 2005 Jim Dalgety-owned Kaikoura Cup winning mare Imagine That, came off the trail to outfinish the Greg Payne-trained Beezie Madden (3f Courage Under Fire-Bibi Maizoon) by 1 3/4 lengths in their mobile 2000m qualifier in 2:33.6, the leaders running their last 800m in 60.6s.
Family Photo, from a Sierra Kosmos mare from a half-sister to the mighty Sundon and speedy mare Sungait Reb, ran clear by 9 lengths to score in the qualifying trot over 2600m from a stand in 3:36.4, running her last 400m in 30.8s.
