LIGHTNING RAIDER WINNING AT 14 IN USA
Former Kentuckiana Lodge pacer Lightning Raider continues to defy his age by winning at age 14 (to Norhern Hemisphere time) at Buffalo Raceway, New York, last weekend.
He led from the ace barrier in a $4400 pace, holding by a head in 1:58.6.
Lightning Raider, a winner of the 2010 Marlborough Group Two Pelorus Trust 4YO Classic and Group Three Kumeu Cup for the Cran Dalgety stable, and driver Dexter Dunn, was racking up his 52nd lifetime win.
A veteran of over 230 career starts for over $600,000 in earnings, the Christian Cullen-Talent Hanover initially won 10 of 53 NZ starts for $119,597 when raced by Jim and Susan Wakefield.
Like many smart NZ pacers, he was sold off-shore to Australia after winning his share in NZ, but it was unlikely he would be able to win an aged Group One feature here.
He added another seven wins from 33 starts in Australia, including a Group Three 4 & 5YO Championship win at Albion Park, before being exported to North America, where he has continued to be placed to advantage.
Lightning Raider has a 1:52.8 mile best as an eight-year-old in the United States.
