NZ-TRAINED QUINELLA IN FIRST VICTORIA OAKS HEAT
Dr Susan was solid stepping up in distance with a runner-up finish behind fellow NZ-trained filly Stylish Memphis in their $24,000 Victorian Oaks Heat at Ballarat on Saturday, January 18.
The Kentuckiana Lodge filly led early for driver Anthony Butt, but surrendered the lead to the persistent NZ-bred stablemate mid-race.
Stylish Memphis, driven by Mark Purdon for Canterbury trainers, Mark Jones and Brendon Hill, held by 2.2 metres in a smart 3:17.5 for the 2710m, a mile rate of 1:57.3.
The winner quickened over her last 800m in 55.4s and final 400m in 26.9s.
This was the faster of the two Oaks Heats, with the Emma Stewart-trained favourite Maajida leading up to win the second heat for driver Greg Sugars in 3:20.9.
The Kiwis enjoyed another good night with the Greg and Nina Hope-trained AG’s White Socks leading throughout to win the Ballarat Cup in the hands of Greg Sugars, holding the barnstorming late runs from the Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen-trained stablemates, Self Assured and Chase Auckland, in 3:15.4 (2710m).
